Outreach Best Practices Guide for Increasing Enrollment of African American & Black Families in Home Visiting Programs

We’re excited to share our new guide for strengthening engagement with African American and Black families in home visiting. Filled with practical strategies, conversation examples, and resources, it’s designed to help home visiting professionals and programs build trust, deepen relationships, address barriers to participation, and create more welcoming experiences for families.

The guide grew out of ongoing conversations about the barriers African American and Black families face in accessing home visiting services, and about the need for outreach that is more culturally responsive and centered on trust. It was developed through a collaboration between the African American Home Visiting Engagement (AAHVE) Workgroup, the Best Practices Workgroup, and TaVia Wooley of Empower Them Collective.

We see this as a living document, one that will keep growing with the experiences, insights, and feedback of families, home visiting professionals, and community partners. As we continue learning together, we’ll update it to reflect new needs, practices, and resources.

The new guide also builds on the Consortium’s earlier Best Practices Hiring & Retention Guide for Increasing African American Home Visiting Staff. Together, the two guides support both the families we serve and the staff who serve them.
